    kimaldis - I was interested in your comment about your wife's apparent food poisoning and your wondering whether if could have been connected to a blighted tomato. I've not, to my knowledge ever eaten a tomato which has been infected by blight, but have on occasions accidentally eaten a tomato which has been going bad and generally the flavour is so foul that the immediate reaction is to either to spit it out or retch it out. It is of course possible that the tomato she ate was blighted and that the warm temperature inside her stomach had accelerated the rotting process. Has anybody else experienced this?
    It's disappointing that you've lost all your tomatoes. I've had no blight this year, but the two previous years have been well documented as being Blight Years, and having lost all my tomatoes in a previous blight year, I now subdue my organic principles and spray with Dithane, as well as growing some few Ferline blight resistant tomatoes, amongst other varieties, as another back up. I don't know whether it's the spraying that has protected my crop or the fact that I'm the only person around here, as far as I know, who is growing tomatoes outdoors, so perhaps there's been little opportunity for blight spores from elsewhere to be spread.

    I have removed the plant which showed early signs of blight today. We have been away for a few days and the blight was spreading fast. Hoping to be able to ripen some of the fruit indoors for souping. So far the cherry ones are ok.

  • I pulled out my single beefsteak (Brandywine) tomato plant due to blight today. Fortunately it is at the opposite end of the garden from my other tomatoes (alicante and tumbling tom), about 30m away so I'm hoping it won't spread. We had a full smith period 2 weeks ago, but since then it has been quite cold at night here, so I wasn't being too vigilant, oh well. We had had 2 ripe beefsteak off it so far, I have put the green ones in a bowl with some ripe cherry toms but I don't have much hope for them to ripen, most aren't even fully grown. It was a 30p nearly-dead plant from homebase, so I was pretty impressed to get anything from it really!

    My tumbling toms are looking a bit brown and crappy but I think it is just that they are just getting past it now, they have been giving us red fruits since mid July.
