They would normally send a recorded delivery letter to the last address they have for the policyholder giving 7 days notice the policy will be cancelled.
Try ringing the Insurers and asking when / if a letter was sent
I had a letter in the last year threatening to cancel my insurance unless i contacted them within 14 days, (anomoly when I started a new policy) but it was certainly not sent recorded.0 -
Direct line cancelled my insurance a few years ago because a dd didnt get paid, they sent no letters and for three moths I was driving around unaware that I had no insurance.
Same happened to my dad last year again with Direct line no letters etc they just cancelled policy imo Direct line stink. You may click thanks if you found my advice useful0 -

OMG that is who she was insured with too thats disgusting did insurance company have an explaination for you or your Dad?0 -
Yes I see your points thanks
But I do know there is no way she would take the chance of knowingly driving the car without insurance she usally has her kids with her and she wouldnt take the risk. I dont trust these insurance companies anyway or banks.
A friend's GF was in a collision from the rear by a heavily preganant woman who had 2 children in the car with her, the 3rd party begged and pleaded to not call the police and deal direct, it was only later my friend's GF learned the 3rd party did not have insurance
Con people and criminals do not look or behave a certain way
The majority of fill up and drive off are not commited by the 'chav' lookalike type, in the local paper it was clear they were middle aged men and women
Not saying your friend is in the wrong, but to be fair the police can only act on the records they have access to, and that would not be DD details. What if she had been involved in an accident with a pedestrian?
Perhaps next time round she should pay the insurance in one lump sum :beer:0 -
Thanks for comments yeah I can understand that people cant go around with out insurance but I dont understand how an insurance company can do that without contacting the person they insure.
She was insured untill September so there shouldnt have been a probelm anyway just have to see what happens with the bank and insurance company.
This is not aimed at the OP.
In my experience some people especially those with debt problems refuse to sign for / collect recorded delivery letters as they worry about the contents of the letter. However if the Insurer have sent the letter it is deemed to be issued and whether or not the recipient signs for it they can cancel the policy0 -
An Insurance company wold normally only cancel the policy after several missed or late payments, though some insurance companies are more lenient than others, if the last payment came out at the end of July then the next one was requested at the start of August then the most logical conclusion that I can come up with is that the July payment was requested twice, and cleared on second request. Then the next payment in August was requested on the due date, it was again refused, then the Insurance was cancelled, some Insurance companies have been known to send a letter stating that they will reapply for funds in the first month, but that if the DD doesn't go through first time again then the policy will be cancelled, some Insurance companies also say this letter means that they don't have to inform the insured party before cancelling as this letter is notice of intended action. A bit harsh if you ask me, but I would assume it would be in the T&C.0

I was told by an Insurance bod that some companies don't do this anymore, it is all in the T&C of your insurance, seems a bit stupid to me, as there could be reasons why the DD bounced, bereavment, illness etc.
But a lot of things have changed during the Tenure of New Labour, the entire coutry seems to want to crimuinalise the normal bloke on the street, whilst career criminals get legal aid and arem allowed to sue the government for breaches of human rights when in prison.0 -

What has the Goverment got to do with it?
Irrespective of which Goverment is in power , drivers using a car on UK public roads have to have valid insurance cover.0 -
Indeed. It has nothing to do with the govt and everything to do with the millions of people who took out insurance on DD then didn't pay once they'd got the covernote. Now that the MID is in place, you can no longer get away with showing a copper a cover note.0

Reread my post, I stated that a lot of things have changed under New Labour, which they have, Insurance companies used to give leeway to people with financial problems to do with payment, and give a bit of time to sort it.
With things like insurance do you think the Insurance companies could change things without laws being altered etc, unlikely, after all loads of things to with motoring have changed over the last few years.
As an Example
You can now give PCNs using CCTV, or a council traffic warden used to have to have written the ticket and out it on the windscren for it to be valid, if they didn't put it on and you didn't physically prevent them from doing so then the ticket wasn't valid, this was changed by the government, hence why the first thing a warden does is take photographs, that is the only proof needed to enforce a PCN.
As far as siezing a car for no insurance at the side of the road, that was something only brought into force recently, I am sure it was the government that ammended the law to allow it, otherwise why have the police not being doing this for years.0
