My mum has a problem with her laptop the cursor on it via the touch pad will not move, she has tried turning it on and off, took the battery out and nothing. She gets the start up page with her name on but then the cursor will not move. I have read on the internet press Fn + F9, Fn + F6 none of these work, has anyone got any other ideas I can recommend to her. There is also no button to disable touch pad on this computer so I really do not know what else to do or what the problem could be. Please could anyone offer any advice, thanks?????

Firstly - on the assumption that it was working until recently - what was the last thing done to the laptop before it stopped working?
You don't say what OS it's running so difficult to be specific with instructions, but if she looks in Control Panel, System at Device Manager, is the mouse shown in the Hardware section as working normally?
It could simply be a hardware failure, but one other possibility is that it has become (for some unknown reason) disabled in the BIOS, as most have an option to turn it off there. However, it's hard to see how that could just happen without human intervention...0 -
As a temporary measure has she got a usb mouse she can use instead? My son's HP laptop developed a fault with the touchpad not working at times. The 'synaptic pointing device' disappeared. Sometimes it would re-appear when first starting up, or when removing the battery and pressing the on button to drain the power down.
Eventually he sent it in for repair, the return note was very vague but suggested something internally had worked loose.

Thanks for your replies, the OP is Winows XP and yes it was working normally up until yesterday morning. I will be visiting after so I will try and get to the control panel and see if I can take it back a few days see if that makes any difference, funnily enough she has said it says new hardware installed so from what you have said it sounds as if this could be the connection. I will try to find the last thing she has done, Mothers!!!! She has also tried an external mouse but it still won't move. Many thanks.0

It does sound like the toutchpad is locked or a driver issue with the toutchpad, if the toutchpad was faulty it should of worked with the external mouse unless the pad is locked.
I don't know much about this model, but most HP's you find the toutchpad lock is a small button just above the toutchpad that can easily be pressed by mistake0 -
I will try to find it when I go later the moel is 6820 F, I will let you know how I get on, Thanks for replying.0
