Don't expect the battery to last any longer. All that is likely to happen is that the battery meter will work in conjunction the other power options....instead of just cutting out without warning.

The battery does sound like it's had it, is the laptop still in warranty ?

Also I'm afraid to say but this is a common fault with some of the HP's and it was a faulty mainboard that will need replacing but i do think in your case it's the battery. One thing you can try is to update the BIOS (flash) to the latest version, i have known this to fix the problem and HP would tell you to do this anyway.

Make sure you find your model of laptop then download the BIOS update.

You can check your warranty here,

It is still within warranty, I also recieved a 2 year extended warranty as part of the deal.

My assumption is that batteries would never be covered as part of this though?

Her is info from the warranty check:

Think you will find the battery will be coved by warranty then, i work a lot with HP, it's my job to book the faulty returns in with the manufactures and i find that HP are good at replacing the power supply's and battery's under warranty. They will send you a new battery then you just send the old one back to them (pre paid) but if they think it's a fault with the laptop you will have to send it in for repair but it's usually a quick turnaround with HP

They will tell you to update the BIOS though before they do anything, it seems to be HP'S answer to any fault, update the BIOS
