British Gas - Electricity: too late to change?

My Dad gets the Gas and Electricity from BG. He's just had an electricity statement and at the bottom is says that our monthly payments will increase from £37 a month to £67.00! Should we be changing, is it too late to change? We really haven't got a clue. A few years ago we went with Scottish Power and ending up moving back to BG so we are a bit sceptical about changing again.

Energy costs have gone up a lot recently, so really it shouldn't be too much of a surprise.

Your best bet would be to look at one of the comparison sites and check who is cheapest for your area.
However be aware that some companies may be just ABOUT to put up prices, so it's a bit of a minefield because you never know what is about to happen.

This link is useful because it shows price rises.

You can see from this when the company you thinking of switching to last raised their prices.
I they haven't done it for a while then there may be an increase on the cards.

If you make a switch, it won't necessarily be the cheapest for ever.
Unfortunately if you want to save money you need to continually review and keep switching (if necessary).
There is time and effort involved so you need to make a judgement about whether it's worth saving the money.
For some people it is and some people it isn't but unfortuntately it's very unusual to be able to find a company that will be the best for ever.

Why don't you calculate how much you need to be paying for yourself based on previous kWh consumption? Use a calculator like this to make it easier if you wish, it's not difficult.

Hi Sherbie...consumers talk of' swings and roundabouts,' and 'it all comes down to the same thing', BUT you need to be on the cheapest reliable energy provider at all times, then you are on top. Some gas and electric do lag behind in their price rises, purposely to attract customers, in which case grab it, then when things get expensive move on. Having learnt the switching process I am now quite prepared to switch , probably not more than twice a year.

  • Thanks for all the information, I'm gonna dig out some old bills and have a look at the sites listed.
