Reducing size of an AVI file to email/upload to website

I have a series of video clips which I recorded using my digital camera (Canon S3 IS).

The resulting AVI files are very large (50MB for a high resolution clip of a few seconds).

I would like to be able to email these files or transfer them over a messaging system, but at present the files are far too large.

I have tried zipping the files up but it doesn't make much difference.

Is there any other way to make these AVI files more portable?

Thanks!

  • Upload them to a webserver with good bandwidth and good storage space. Use that.

OR - create your own webserver. Use a local machine which is connected to the internet 24 hours a day. Give yourself a static IP and if you don't have one use something like dyn-dns.org . With that a little program is on your pc and updates your ip to a hostname like anythingyouwant-dnsprefix.co.uk where anythingyouwant is what you want, and dns prefix is the options it gives you.

All you have to do is install an FTP Server (a free one) and then set up a user account. By doing ftp://anythingyouwant-dnsprefix.co.uk from any other computer, you can then put in your username and password and then download the data on your computer :)

Hope that makes sense. If not look up in google simple tutorial for ftp server.

    Reduce the resolution.
  • Is there no other compression technique which could do the trick?

He's sugesting you lower the resolution of the avi file, then perhaps the bitrate of the avi file and compress it further by using a more effective codec such as divx or xvid. Which will decrease the overall file size.

Or you could split the .avi file into smaller chunks for transfer with something like http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/ or you could use WinRar http://www.astahost.com/info.php/how-compress-one-file-into-several-parts_t3927.html

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

convert it to mpg, divx or xvid to reduce the bitrate, then zip it. it should be able to be sent via email or fileshare that way.

  • very easy job with Virtual Dub (open source and freeware).
Just select the Compression type (xvid will do) and/or aspect ratio and you will ge the output you want!
