Can anyone recommend me a Cheap Reliable Internet Provider please?

I'm with Tiscali/Talk Talk at the moment and I'm paying £14.99 for a service that is getting slower and slower, plus in the middle of browsing the internet it just cuts off for no reason and then comes back on! I've had the computer checked out and they say it's the ISP! I've called Tiscali/Talk Talk and they say it's not them!

Anyway, I've finally had enough of them (been with them for years) and would like to go somewhere else, but I haven't got a clue where to go and who to go with.

I don't use it much, just mainly for browsing the internet and sending e-mails.

Any ideas please?

To be honest ISPs always seems like one of "those" topics to me. Most people either haven't had problems and so over-rate theirs, or have had problems and completely pan them. Most people don't really know if problems are their own fault, the ISP's or BT's.

I went with BE and has been superb, recommended to a friend who had no end of issues.

BE ( bethere.co.uk) or O2 (same company) - tops! no throttling, no counting, good service - even cheaper with an O2 phone (payg or monthly) - only problem is that BT won't allow them in at too many exchanges yet. Check yours by postcode (google samknows)

NTL/Virgin? Don't know if you have it in your area but very reliable in my experience no disconnections or throttling.

Bad point: Customer service is shlte
Good point: You never need to use customer service.

glicky, you didn't mention if you live in a cabled area. If you do live in a Virgin Media cabled area then you may be able to haggle a sub-£20 phone line + 10MB broadband deal all-in (permanent price). Cable BB does not suffer so much from evening 'contention' which is the equivalent of your connection 'waiting at the lights' on it's journey.

Check out "SamKnows.com" postcode checker to see what services & ISP's are in your area.

But if you have SKY then you can get their 2Mb ADSL for free (if you take their phone package as well, I think.)

My OH has Sky Unlimited - because O2 wasn't available on her exchange.

They confirmed no throttling/shaping or download caps on the phone, and to give them their due, I've seen no issues apart from the cheapo router freezing twice - swiftly replaced by my old trustworthy Netgear DG834. No issues since then.

    Virgin are notorious for throttling.

I recommend O2 llu. Their broadband is cheap and reliable, but even cheaper if your mobile is on their network.

I'd avoid Virgin - can be very slow at peak times.

If you have an Orange mobile you can get Orange home broadband for £10 a month. Works fine and if you get a problem you can call free from your Orange mobile. But learn Urdu, Punjabi and Hindi. Actually, you do sometimes get through to a call centre in UK.
