I think a Le Creuset is far more versatile than a slow cooker. I can't stand slow cookers - everything in them tastes the same. And a few reads of other threads would suggest I'm not alone. Also, you can't brown anything properly in them so you need an extra pan to cook anything involving onions/browning.
Like Penelope, I'm only 5ft4 and have no problem lifting my cast iron casseroles - my largest is 28cm across but probably the most versatile is 24cm across.
To the OP - I would suggest pointing your OH in the direction of a few of the duff reviews and suggesting a good cast iron stock pan and see how that goes down before abandoning the idea of a soup maker altogether.0 -
I don't think its a bad idea at all. I asked for a bigger mixing bowl a couple of years ago and its brilliant.
However, any decent sized saucepan will do the job. I'm sure if you go to John Lewis or somewhere similar they will have something called a "soup pan", but it'll just be a saucepan.
I guess you have got saucepans already, so a couple of cooking books will be fine. If you have a "The Works", near you, they did have "The Covent Garden Soup" book which would be nice.0 -
I have to say that that Cuisinart soup-maker linked to earlier is one of the most useless gadgets I've ever heard of. Has it been featured in one of the telly cookery programmes recently? To my mind one of those would be a terrible a waste of money. Gimme a decent heavy pan and a stick-blender any day0

OK... You are already going to buy her some ace presents by the sound of it soooooo.... go get a nice big pan for soup... and just give it to her.... Tell her you remembered her mentioning it but you didn't want to give a pan at Christmas as you were worried it was thoughtless, so she is having it now
This would have been better done in Nov, or Oct to be further from Xmas, but will still be appreciated0 -
I agree that a Pressure Cooker it's amazing at making soups (in 1/3rd of the time)!
If she asked for it, and it's not her main pressent... then get it for her x
Personally I LOVE getting recipe books and cookware for Christmas and Birthdays. As long as I get something personal from my OH tooWe spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy! Mortgage Free Wannabe :dance:Overpayments Made: £5400 - Interest Saved: £11,550 - Months Saved: 240 -

Do it! Ignore the other posts - it's what she's been hinting at and you're planning some girlie gifts too.
I'd be quite happy with that gift, well, I wouldn't, but only because I have a soup pan already!
I've asked for a recipe book for Christmas from my husband and that will be my only gift from him. I can't bear getting 'tat' for Christmas and useful presents are definitely for me. Christmas, to me, is more about spending the day with those who matter and STUFFING YOUR FACE WITH FOOD AND BOOZE!!!!!!!0 -
If I wanted a souper (you see what I did there?) gadget and got a big pan, I'd be most fed up.
OP, why don't you clarify with your OH what it is exactly that she was hinting at. If she really does just want a stock pot, then you're a very lucky guy! LOL0 -
If you have the other presents then its fine but some men (sorry) only buy their wives a kitchen pressy and it does make us feel like housekeepers - my OH eventually got the message! - I am not a housekeeper!Saving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j0

I have bought two dvd box sets, a pocket HD camcorder and accessories, a couple of recipe books (one for soup) and am going to try and get the soap & glory tote bag from Boots tomorrow morning... I think but for some chocs/sweets, i'm going to leave it at that, I might get her the soup pan if I come across one but i've been put-off enough not to go out of my way to look for one!
Thanks for all your help people x0 -
