Oh I remember Domestic science. The first time we made a christmas cake I broke my ankle in the gym lesson and was sent off to hospital clutching the tin with my cake in! I was more worried about my cake than my foot :rotfl:

This year my dear friend Hannah (recently widowed) has offered to make me a cake, she is trying to keep busy, bless her, and I know it will be absolutely wonderful. Am now looking for something very special to make her. Every time we visit we swop things, its lovely to know that people are thinking of you

Also made some lavender bags this week and they turned out so lovely, so might make some as xmas presents. I don't know how long the lavender smell will stay though

I have some lavender bags in my wardrobe I made - oh, must be 5 years now. The scent is still there :) A lot fainter now, of course, but still recognisably lavender !

Just add some drops of lav essential oil to refresh, let it dry before putting in beside clothes in case it stains.

    Pssst..

DDs gift for her teacher (don't ask rolleyes.gif) this year will be a personalised mug (I just had DD write her teachers name and photographed it) with a package of snowman soup and maybe a nice iced biscuit - again, all wrapped up in the trusty cellophane! :j

Anyway, the point of telling you this is, the mug cost £7.99 and the delivery £1.99 on top of that, so £9.98 all in. BUT Snapfish are offering £10 cashback for new accounts via topcashback. So, if you click through them and register a new account, you'll be 2p in profit and have a personalised photo mug as a pressie.

In all, the present will cost me around 60p, maybe 5p more if I blow the budget and add a biscuit :p

Perhaps not the best deal if you're on such a budget and desperate for the money right now, as you do have to wait for the cashback to come through, but a good deal all in.

    Hope that helps someone x
  • Thanks for the idea Boodle but I cannot stand marzipan! I'm another who remembers Domestic Science. Those were the days. Still trying to think of some christmas ideas and have recently started buying some small stocking fillers. DD1 is going through a really rough time with things lately (emotionally and physically) so I want it to be special for them.

I'm another who recalls Domestic Science lessons. Used to really enjoy them. I particularly remember the obligatory fruit salad making. It's been the first things my kids both made in their cooking classes at high school also. I suppose there isn't a great deal that can go wrong with a fruit salad really though!

I purchase pressies when i see them for loved ones, throughout the year. It doesn't matter if things are new or pre-loved from a charity shop, if i know something is the perfect present for someone i get it (if i can afford to do so).

It also helps that i purchase gifts in sales and that i make gifts also. I'm currently crocheting a granny square blanket for my parents to go into their Christmas hamper. The thread i'm using for the blanket should have been £5.99 a ball and i got it for 59p a ball so i am very savvy when i can be and hate to pay full price for anything. Usually i find that shopping around, whether physically or through the internet, things can almost always be bought discounted.

I love a bargain too, I can spend hours searching for the best price - admittedly on-line as I can't be bothered trawling the shops. I've even been known to give a present of a book bought in a charity shop ! ;)

My preparations aren't very OS, the most OS i'm getting is making little hamper/gift boxes for everyone. I just bought a few of these http://www.fragrancedirect.co.uk/bourjois/bourjois-petit-guide-de-style-eyes-15g/invt/0019050/ to put with mum, sis and one friend's presents. They're great little sets, I have some myself and a bargain at 99p :D

    Debt-free and Proud!
I've decided that this year we will have Christmas at our house and my parents are coming, then my in-laws will come just after and they may overlap I'm not sure yet. 'We' is me, OH and 15mo DD (will be 17mo at Christmas).

I have no idea what I'm doing! I have talked to the butcher and know I need to order a turkey soon, but I need to plan all the meals, the decorations, the entertainment, etc., and I need to keep to a bit of a budget although not too much i.e. I shop at the butcher and Waitrose so not exactly cheap!

Please help me plan meals - everyone will expect puddings which I never do, and I don;t know about snacks/suppers.

Is there a Christmas thread I can be pointed to? Or can anyone help me here? I feel I need to start planning as it makes me feel slightly panicked thinking about it now!

    And breathe....
Puddings... we usually have a xmas pud, ice-cream (for kids) and a cheesecake, all of these can be bought or made in advance.

Main meal... we have a "family" meal as in whoever does dinner the main course is the same, again most of this can be cooked and frozen in advance.

Last but not least this, is your christmas, who says you can't start your own traditions? Do your thing, and if anyone is not happy hey don't invite them next year

It's only a bargain if you were going to buy it anyway!
