Direct Debit Abuse

I have just fallen foul to complacency over direct debit insurance. My pet plan with More Than started off at £12 per month. I have been with them 10 years and made no claims.

Over the years the premiums have steadily gone up a few pounds per year till last year they reached £25.

I didn't really notice this and dont mind a few quid.

Then earlier this year More Than doubled this to £50 per month changed the excess from £50 to £70 and the fact that the remaining sum I can only claim 80% of this.

I was notified in the usual manner by letter.

I KNOW I should have checked but surely there should be some legislation that if the monthly payment increases by more than 25% they should have to obtain a new signed mandate to ensure the payer is aware ?

This leave you wide open to this sort of thing particularly if you are a long standing customer.

Any one else come across this ?

You never got an anual renewal letter from them very year?

I cancelled my PDSA one when they wanted £40 for each dog ( plus the excess went up to £80) and went to Tesco where it's £42 for the two of them.

You have to find out the next renenwal date and cancel it so you can shop around for the best deal.

I think you should change the title of your thread from "direct debit abuse" to "I'm paying more than I need to due to my own stupidity".

They've not abused the direct debit system in any way. You gave them permission to take amounts from your bank until further notice, they've informed you in writing every time the premium has increased so you could decide whether to stay with them or not but you chose not to take any notice of the letters. How is that their fault?

There is "legislation" already. The direct debit guarantee requires them to inform you if they are going to increase the amount. They did. The only person you should be mad with is yourself.
  • i dont think they have done anything wrong tbh

just becasue you think they should have to get a new mandate signed if the premium goes up by more than 25% does not mean you have any right to complain becasue they dont do it

some people have some really odd ideas
