Not much to do in Pisa. I went a few months back, landed in Pisa midday. Spent a few hours at the tower etc and then grabbed a train to Florence for a few days. On the way back we spent the night in Pisa. Our hostel was at a rather busy piazza (piazza Garibaldi) and the bar next door was open till fairly late. I remember going to the gelato shop which was also next to the hostel at around 2am for a quick fix of ice cream.

I would strongly reccomend spending your first day in Florence and your second in Pisa, much more to do in Florence and its only 1hr train ride away

If you go anywhere by train remember to void your ticket BEFORE you get on at the little yellow boxes at the station. Failure to do so and you WILL be fined. No small amount either!

Not far up the coast on the train is the big resort of Viareggio.

We went to Pisa last year for the day. We were on a cruise ship which docked at Livorno so got the train to Pisa which took about 20 minutes. The station is about a half hour walk from the sights, a pleasant stroll over the river, through the old town and market, and up to the tower and duomo etc.

There are plenty of eating places around the town, and of course you pay much more near the tower. We had pigged out on the ship, of course, so we settled for slices of pizza etc from the lovely bakeries. Ice creams are a bit special though!

In truth there isn't much to detain you once you've seen the sights around the tower. The tower itself isn't that tall, what will surprise you is the actual 'lean'. There are the usual array of tat-sellers around the tower area. We were in Pisa for a total of about 5 hours and thought it was plenty, especially as it started to rain as we walked back to the station. A pleasant place, but when you've seen it, that's it!
  • Thanks all

    Apologies, forgot about this thread.

So im off to Pisa on Thursday. Just checked BBC weather and to my horror the worst is predicted... HEAVY RAIN  ... typical!

No one seems to have wanted to stay there longer than a few hours! I decided to just book the hotel in Pisa for both nights because I thought we could just walk round in the sun stopping off at bars and restaurants for most of one day but the weather has just killed off that vision!

Guess I will just have to see what to do when I get there now.
  • Two hours is sufficient in Pisa. Then take the train to Florence (no longer than one hour). Florence you can spend all day in.

Pop into the Trip Advisor forums where there are tons of info you can search through for Pisa and Florence ideas - or ask a fresh question.

There are a lot of cyclists in Pisa - nice vibe about it but there isn't much to do. Nice enough to come back to after an afternoon/evening in Florence.

Regarding the times of your flights I would just finish up in Pisa then make your way to the airport by train - its fantastic - as the train station is right outside the airport terminal. In fact, when you arrive in Pisa airport, either turn right to queue for the usually very long queue for bus and train tickets or turn left just before you step outside and keep on walking in a straight line, past the toilets at the end - there you end up at the train station - the journey to Pisa Centrale (central) is only a 5-10 min ride (iirc). You can buy tickets from the machine (remember to validate it in the yellow box) or from the ticket office mentioned above.

Enjoy. Make sure when you go to Florence you take a bus (or walk) up to Piazza Michelangleo - fantastic views and amazing photo opportunities.

    Hope this helps.
  • Lucca is a good half day trip - worth a visit as so close by.
