Just spoke to Carers Allowance Unit - called the main number I took from DirectGov (which was actually the same number as on the letter).

The letter is legitimate. It came from their Checking and Assurance Team. The person I spoke to told me they constantly take a small random cross section of claims and check that the person recieving the benefit is actually the person entitled to make the claim. Basically he assured me it is routne (for them at least!) and nothing to worry about.

Mystery solved (always best to check I guess)!
