Hi all,
My partner has a nissan primera that has been sat outside his parents house for ages, it needs a few repairs and he can't afford to repair it at the minute. He possibly wants to sell the car anyway, we don't know whether he would be better doing it up and selling it to get a 'cheaper to run' car, doing it up and keeping it, or just sell it as it is and get a 'cheaper to run' car? We have been debating this for ages! Don't know where to start.... please help?
Thank you,
Amanda.

Just get it back on the road and keep it it running. Better the devil you know.
(This assumes that it doesn't need anything major)0 -
Good morning and welcome to the forum,
There are a number of factors that needs to be considered here.
Firstly, a 'few repairs' is this costly or easy to repair to make roal legal and pass an MOT? What are the repairs?
Secondly, do you know anyone who can carry out the repairs cheaper than a local garage?
What is the current value of the car in it's state?
What is the estimate repair bill?
It is well kmown that a good thorough clean and fixing up a car can increase it's value but that depends if it's just a simple repair such as a headlight, service or brakes. If it's more complicated and you're esimate is say £300 and you will add £200 to the value then that's a no brainer0 -
Its a bit catch 22. I definately wouldnt fix it up to sell it.
I'd fix to keep, or sell it as is and buy another smaller more economical one.
As mentioned, it's all down to the costs to fix it.0 -
lots of maybes involved here and without more info as mentioned above its impossible to advise really, but if you are able to do it up to run then not much point going through the hassle of selling and taking a chance on another second hand car that could potentially cost you more in the long run0

Depends what the work is, these are very strong and capable engines, (especially the petrols) so you could fix it and have another few years trouble free motoring. The Primera (up to about 2000ish) is brilliant fun to drive, it's an overlooked drivers car, having driven these I can safely say the handling will upset many "hot hatches".
Unless it's really terminal stuff, I'd be inclined to fix it, as mentioned "better the devil you know."
