Some lenders (like Morgan Stanley) are known to be "picky". Most lenders just look at your credit score and make a decision. Depending on what you mean by "we had some debt problems in the past", it may be worth going for a mainstream lender, and seeing if they take you, or going for the ones that specialise in people with bad credit histories.

For example if you have CCJ's or missed minimum payments, incurred charges etc, then you probably need to go for one of the "bad credit cards". Go to http://www.moneysupermarket.com/cards/credit_card.asp and the "Click here for another 16 credit card comparison options" and "adverse payment history or ccj's". There are three listed, all with high APR's as you'd expect. These are cards to use to use every month, pay in full every month in order to build up a credit rating.

You could try just applying for any mainstream card and see if they accept you. I would avoid applying for any extended interest free periods unless you are sure you can pay it back and not get yourself back into debt. I've just looked at the cashback offers, but they all say you need a good credit history.

The other option would be to look at who you have an existing relationship with, eg your current account, savings? would they be more likely to accept you?
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
