Windows suddenly closing down problem

about once a week i get a problem whee i suddenly get the blue background screenwith white writing saying ....
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage.

couple of differrent versions ..

one that sometimes mentions problem with a "usb connector" .. i do have a belkin connecter for 4 usb's .

i have been on belkin website looking to see if there's any drivers etc but cannot see anything.

The other version .. as i've just had this morning ...

it shows as reason ..
STOP : OxOOOOOO8E ( OxCOOOOOO5 , OxOOOOOOOO OxF36F6C40 ,
OxOOOOOOOO )
mentions .. check adequate disk space (loads) ... and check bios updates . ( don't know what / how to do .

All i seem to be able to do is turn the laptop off and back on again ..

I'm running xp on a dell laptop .. aol 9 .. and all the advast/adaware/ewido/spybot etc etc .. daily.

Anybody help ??

Is it possible the laptop is overheating or is it when you perform a specific task, when you have plugged something into your usb hub? Any more specific details may tell us why you get this fault...we might be able to track down the root of the problem then
    I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j

Those who can do, those who can't, come to me for lessons:cool:

  • very sure it's not overheating ...

with the usb connector .. nothing changes or moves .. just has permanently plugged in printers.. scanner .. mouse .

times it closes down unexpectedly are totally random .. today.. only 10 minutes after starting up.

last weeks half way through writing a Word doc

    sometimes whilst just surfing .

always without any notice and of course when it happens i lose anything i'm in midst of (but have learnt to "save" every minute!!)
  • what i haven't been able to do is experiment without the usb connector .. as i'd need to go for some days/weeks .. before finding out if i get a crash .. but i need these things permantely connected
  • Are you using XP? If so have a look here (http://www.updatexp.com/stop-messages.html) to see if you can track down the specific messages you are getting.

Also try typing in the error message (if the above doesn't work) straight into Google.

Agree with Torby, some further and more detailed info may help to pinpoint the problem.

As a first step I too would consider that it could be overheating. Are you running any monitoring software that tells you what the system, CPU temps are?

Are you running any monitoring software that tells you what the system, CPU temps are?... I don't know ?.. is there something that tells me this ?

i'll check the other suggestions soon.
  • tried the updatexp.com ... found nothing .

tried the whole error message on google .. only showed me to pc-utility.com which ran a scan ... reported as ...

    37 com/active x entries
    1 windows start up item
    384 file /path references
    5 prog shortcuts
    443 empty registry keys ..

no suprise said it wouldn't do anything until i subscribed !!

will look at each of the error messages seperately on google a little later today.
  • im not sure why you are getting the blue screen of death but if you send me some print screens of the problem (if you can) then ill help as much as i can.

Have you installed something new recently? what operating system are you using? Have you updated any service packs etc?

Might be worth your while using XP's recovery console so that you can roll back to a time when you know it was working correctly.

Let me know and i can talk you through it if you like?

but i need these things permantely connected
No you don't - not unless you are using the printer & scanner 24/7. You only need them plugged in when you are going to scan something or print something and I doubt if you are wanting to scan & print at the same time.

So unplug the hub & stick your mouse into the freed USB socket. When you need the printer unplug it & plug the printer in & use the mouse pad instead. That's assuming the other USB port isn't free

I suspect the problem may be with the USB hub itself & with everything plugged in you may be drawing too much power from the computer for it to handle
  • nadeembutt .. never been able to print that blue screen .. how do i ?? .. is there an "F" button ? .

    don't know about "recovery console"

nothing new recently .. but maybe think it started after i got a scanner and then needed a usb connector.

alanrowell... suppose trhat is a fair point .. i can manage doing it that way. I'll have a go... can use the 2 laptop sockets for mouse and modem.

concerns me though that the simplicity of using a connector for mouse..printer..scanner.. broadband modem .. should be fairly normal /routine stuff ?

all updates and everything up to date .
  • I get this too but it reboots before i get the chance to read it.

I think i've traced it to BitTorrent.......with BT running it falls over at random times (3mins to 2 hours), shut BT down and it seems stable
