Have bought the eco balls and although they are ok I find with some things I need a bit more oomph or they come out smelling a bit musty. Was determined not to spend huge amounts on branded powder so had a go at making my own. Only did it yesterday and at the moment its one hard partly solidified gunk so will have to wait awhile until soap dissolves to add more water to get it to the right consistency. When it gets there I will put a wash through and let you know how it goes. I got the deatils from an american site and wasnt sure about actual amounts so just guessed. Now I am hoping that it was for front loaders and not the other sort or else mu kitchen may be awash with foam!

I would proceed with caution as I think the top loading machine is popular in the USA.0

Well done for attempting it, I'm still plodding on with the Value powder and soap crystals mix.
I could never understand the american top loader thing, although I know Math has one, it must be back breaking having to haul all that wet washing out of the machine when it's so much easier to pull it out the front straight into a basket underneath.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

I will proceed with caution and let you know what happens!0

Let us know, I use the bulking out mix, myself, but always interested to hear of anything new.0

I LOVE top loaders, we all have them in NZ. I find is much easier than having to bend down all the time to get at the clothes and you dont have to take out the gungy powder drawer to wash it you just chuck it in the drum. They take MASSIVE loads too...............mmmmmm, might go for a surf to see how expensive they areWW Start Weight 18/04/12 = 19st 11lbsWeight today = 17st 6.5lbsLoss to date 32.5lbs!!!0

My mother used to have one in this country. It tended to take more, wash better (with it's central agitator) and went wrong less. Presumably having all the weight balanced helped rather than ours throwing heavy wet clothes up and down!:D
I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...
I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!0 -
I love my top-loader too because it washes sooo quick, is built like a tank , you can lift the lid and prod about a bit and use whatever detergent to wash with becuase suds and foam are no problem. I often wash lite soil stuff in STARDROPS. I don't know if any other OS know about them yet. LOL :rotfl: But IMO TOP loaders do not wash as well as front loaders. I pre-treat and use more bleach than I used to (casting my mind back 15years LOL) and they do not spin as fast. My top spin is only 600 rpm:eek: I wouldn't swap mine tho!Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0

I really am going to buy one when we have the kitchen done next year. They are now not really any more expensive than front loaders with the same capabilities.
PS - VERY interested to know how the laundry detergent works out.WW Start Weight 18/04/12 = 19st 11lbsWeight today = 17st 6.5lbsLoss to date 32.5lbs!!!0 -
Top loaders used to be what you had, going back 35-40 years. It was top loader or nothing. And a separate spin dryer. I well remember the first front loader in the family lol....
I'd watch it with the laundry detergent. Front loaders not only suffer from excess foam, but if the soap is gunky or not very well dissolved, you can get a breakdown from a soap build up. I was advised by a washing machine engineer not to use those washing powder tablets for this very reason.0 -
used my gloop yesterday and kept a beady eye on the machine in case it foamed like mad but no detrimental effects (that I can see anyway) In fact I dont think I ud=sed enogh although they came up clean enough I think. So possibly I will alternate that with my eco balls.0
