Asparagus crowns?

I was just after some advice. I'm now got my raised beds done and fancy planting some asparagus crowns. I've never grown this before and don't know much about it. When I've looked at buying some crowns there are loads of different variites with some for spring and some for autumn planting. I don't mind whether I get some to plant now or wait till spring but I could do with some advice regarding which variety to get. I'd like to get a variety which is relativly disease resistant and a good cropper. Also I've seen that some are all male varieites, what does this mean? I know you get all female types of cucumbers etc but unsure whether this makes a difference with asaparagus. Any advice would be great. Thanks

Most websites (inc RHS) seem to suggest late March/early April for planting crowns.

I've only grown asparagus from seed in pots, so I'd prob follow their advice, though I recall mine went in in Autumn. My beds are planted with Connover's Colossal and the female plants have small berry-like seed pods. Ideally these should be removed to avoid lots of seedlings.

With all male plants no energy is wasted on seed production.
