Punchbag

Have decided to get a freestanding punchbag and wasnt sure what to go for.
From what I can see there are two types. The first is like a regular punhbag on top of a stand filled with sand or water.
The second is human torso shaped lump of material on top of a similar stand. Some of these types have electronics and various fitness programmes included.
Does anyone have any experience of these, can you make any reccomendations or avoid lists?
Many thanks

I thought this was going to be a horrible domestic abuse thread!!
I used to have a dangling punchbag, but it made far too much noise. Not had the freestanding ones.9/70lbs to lose

This is 'MoneySaving in Marriages, Relationships and Families'. So what do you wish to do with this punchbag? Save money? Marry it? Have a relationship with it? Or start a family?Have decided to get a freestanding punchbag and wasnt sure what to go for.

If he wants to start a family with it he should go for the one shaped like a person. Getting a bag of sand pregnant could make him sore.0 -
i would not recommend a slam man - (the electronci one) i have one, but it rarely gets used over my standard punch bag (I got the slam man before as I had nowhere to hang a bag)
it is ok for a bit of a work out, but is largely plastic and if you miss, even with bag gloves on you feel it.
the other issue with freestanding bags, water or sand filled, is that they will still move / walk across the floor as you use them ! it is a 3/4 man lift to move the slam man - but punching it with force will cause it to walk
so if you can, i would opt for a proper punchbag
you get gets loads of different types - maize ones, are great just for shear chin down slugging, as they are heavy and dont move so much
a standard punchbag, will move alot, as the idea is you work around it
have you tried a local boxing gym ??? from my experience these are cheap, and have a good array of bags !
my old gym was only £5 a week and you could go whenever - and you dont have to fight - my current one charges £3 a session
so its alot cheaper than a gym membership !0 -
Thanks for the decent response.
I have looked at a couple of slam man type setups and come to the same conclusion as you - more of an aerobic workout with a bit of stress relief and buying a second hand one is risky as the electronics must take a real battering.
I do have a standard heavy bag in the shed but the Mrs has filled it with kids toys and its just not practical to get in there to use it as takes 20 minutes of taking stuff out and then putting it back in again.
Have decided to get a second hand freestanding bag with the base at the bottom that can be filled with water or sand. Its going to sit in the corner or a room so nowhere to slide to and as long as it doesnt leak should do the job.
If it doesnt - it will go back on ebay and I will be a wiser man

My Ex was an old bag i wanted to punch sometimes but she wouldn't stand still and went back to her Mum.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

I had one filled with water - after a little while they can become quite brittle - leading to a flood

They also don't feel very satisying to punch - I found it impossible to get any sort of rhythm.Nobody I'd rather be

slam man will move a lot as the base isnt wide enough also as you start punching harder you will knock it over easy it gets annoying picking it up after every punch. boxing bob is better because it has a much wider base and i have yet to knock this one over, but it does still move.
