Gas cooker thermostat broken

The thermostat on our gas cooker has broken (or at least I think that's what the problem is).

The cooker is over 10 years old, so is it worth trying to get a replacement thermostat, or should we just buy a new cooker?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • what exactly is happening with your cooker?
  • It really depends on what condition the cooker is in, the availability of the part and your ability to fit the new one.

It does involve some dismantling of your cooker, but for anyone with plenty of diy confidence & ability it should be a breeze.

Basically you will have one thermostat in your oven and one for your grill. These will both be connected to the gas valve (behind where the knobs are on your cooker). It should take between 1/2 to 1 hour.

    Hi.

My friendly plumber/ch engineer looked into a new thermostat for a gas cooker for me - the part alone would have cost £90 +VAT, plus labour.

After 10 years does the cooker owe you anything?

It lights okay, but doesn't come up to heat, just stays low regardless of which gas mark it's on.

I was just guessing with the thermostat, might be something else for all I know
  • Try cleaning with a toothbrush & wrapping some copper wire around the tip to increase its conductivity and hold the heat better. It will shorten the life of your thermocouple, but if its kaput anyway youve nothing to lose.

  • I wouldn't be looking at the thermostat, it sounds like it's your FSD ( flame supervision device ) ....I need to know the make and model and I can help you better.....the burner might just need cleaning to ensure that a correct flame is surrounding the sensing phial of the FSD or you might have the venturi of the burner blocked with fluff or pet hairs.....Brian.
  • The cooker is a New World Apex 500. I don't really know any more than that - I don't even have a manual as the cooker came with the house when I moved in. Thanks for any help you can give Brian :)
  • light the oven and then look at the burner at the back of the oven to the right hand side of the burner there should be a small sensing phial clipped to it. Check that the flame is not obstructed with food that may have fallen onto the burner. ....if there is no obstruction and the phial is in the flame then your FSD has failed for which you will need a corgi engineer....the cost to repair should be about £50. You won't need the manual....Best wishes .......Brian.
  • Many thanks for all your advice Brian. I'll give what you suggest a go, and if that doesn't work it looks like I'll have to call in a professional.
