go to your local citizen's advice office and explain it to them...they'll be able to advise you. Also, put in writing to comet and sony that this is what you're doing. Flamin' con artists

thing is, you've already started off the process well in advance of Sep 9, so that shouldn't be an issue. It might be worth finding forum member esqui, who has links with comet if I remember correctly....trawl the techie forum and you'll find them.

£214 wow thats some expensive screen, new replacement screens are usually about £80 - £90 and don't take that long to fit so id like to see how they are justifying such a high charge.

Dell charge around £200-250 to replace a non-warranty fault screen, so that's average.

I have to say that unfortunately lcds rarely crack without physical force - heat wouldn't be an issue as they don't get hot. It's possible that your screen assembly was somehow warped/bent or the screws were over-tightened when built (hard to spot from the outside) - a clue would be fine cracking of the screen surround plastics.

My advice would be to find a sympathetic (and cheap!) independent repair shop to examine the damage and the frame to see if anything was buckled (should only take 20min or so) and write a report for claim under warranty.
