Hello all im new on here so just learning,id love some advice i purchased a sony laptop last september from comet its a year old september 9th,i use my comet card to buy it it was 479 pounds and ive paid about 160 pounds off BUT end july 26th i turned my laptop on and had a line in the right hand corner with coloured lines coming down from it,its not been dropped or damaged in anyway, when not in use i put it in its bag,i did notice it had been getting overly hot lately and thought maybe it caused the lcd screen to crack?it couldnt be felt on screen (the line/crack),i contacted comet and sony, sony said if screen cracked it would be 214pounds to replace screen!!!!half the cost of laptop!!!so rang comet head office they said i shouldnt have to pay that and to take to a lady in comet who would send it away (to sony) no mention of a charge at all they rang me earlier saying sorry you would be charged 214pounds as screen damaged so cut a long story short i said i wont pay it so send it back i thought cause its under year old it should be fixed (obviously wrong) and said if i didnt pay for it to be fixed id still have to now pay 59 pounds to get it back!!!!where do i stand i wasnt told id have to pay for courier etc im fuming!!! please help cause im so strssed im making myself feel ill!!!:(

go to your local citizen's advice office and explain it to them...they'll be able to advise you. Also, put in writing to comet and sony that this is what you're doing. Flamin' con artists ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

thing is, you've already started off the process well in advance of Sep 9, so that shouldn't be an issue. It might be worth finding forum member esqui, who has links with comet if I remember correctly....trawl the techie forum and you'll find them.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

£214 wow thats some expensive screen, new replacement screens are usually about £80 - £90 and don't take that long to fit so id like to see how they are justifying such a high charge.0

Dell charge around £200-250 to replace a non-warranty fault screen, so that's average.
I have to say that unfortunately lcds rarely crack without physical force - heat wouldn't be an issue as they don't get hot. It's possible that your screen assembly was somehow warped/bent or the screws were over-tightened when built (hard to spot from the outside) - a clue would be fine cracking of the screen surround plastics.
My advice would be to find a sympathetic (and cheap!) independent repair shop to examine the damage and the frame to see if anything was buckled (should only take 20min or so) and write a report for claim under warranty.IT Field Service Engineer, 20 years with screwdriver and hammer0
