I prefer to you ps3 media server and get it to stream from my laptop that way the folders are how you structure them on the laptop

The media server option is ok but it means you'll have to have the laptop on all the time that you want to play via the PS3, a waste of electric maybe??
As you've realised you can't group via folders etc but you can create playlists for the music, not quite the same but it might suffice.
Another option might be to use a usb drive with the correct folder layout, see the top post on this thread for how it should be setup. It looks like you can use sub folders but you have to choose the 'display all' option.

Im not at mine at the mo but do you mean you know how to sort your list by pressing the Square button? If so then im not sure, your best bet is probably google it.0
