ipod touch...same as iphone but without the phone bit?

thinking at mo of maybe getting an ipod touch as cheaper i think than an iphone. does it otherwise everything the iphone does but without the phone bit. any recommendations? thanks in advance.

You can make calls over Wifi with VoIP on the iPhone Touch using Fring for example.

At the moment that is the case, but there are very strong rumours that there will be a new iPod Touch announced in September which is likely to have the same spec as the iPhone 4 (again, without the phone bit!)
At that point you'll have the choice of getting the new one, or possibly being able to take advantage of clearence price reductions on the old one!

As far as I'm aware, you can only access the internet by using wifi, so you can't top it up and pay for accessing the internet.

Only mentioning as me and OH weren't sure before we got his Ipod Touch.

I like the touch
only reasons i just bought a classic were capacities (160gb vs at best 64gb?)
and the fact the touch isnt compatible with the apple radio remote
i use the remote a lot so not being compatible writes them off for me

My iPod Touch hasn't got a microphone and doesn't have the phone bits.
It does Wi-Fi internet and plays games fine (and also does music!).
My particular model wouldn't take the latest release of the software, but that's just the way things are.

You can buy a microphone for it for a couple of quid if you need one.

It's like the iPhone, except it doesn't make phone calls. So it's exactly like the iPhone

The differences are:
1) Most importantly the lack of internet access without WiFi. This can be circumvented by using the MiFi which you'll need to buy seperately.

2) No GPS. Although if you use WiFi or MiFi (above) it offers some limited location service capability.

3) No camera which I find not a great deal but this will prevent you using things like augmented reality or barcode reading apps.

4) No Mic but you can add an external one.
