Standard University Requirements - GCSE English C or English LIT?

Hello All

I already have grade C In GCSE maths,

I have a D In English and C In English Lit

Will they accept my C In English Lit or should I do a re-take In English to obtain a C?

I currently have the opportunity to retake English GCSE while In my 2nd year at college.

Thanks

  • A C grade in English Language is pretty fundamental for most jobs, certainly graduate jobs, and is inevitably required for degree courses at reputable universities. You might get in at a former polytechnic, but not at a university of any standing.

Better plan your re-sit, since you have the opportunity. ;)

I would rephrase that steve_cov, there are numerous ex poly's that now have an excellent 'standing'.

My understanding is that you do usually require a grade C in English Language.
    Gone ... or have I?

Why not check with your local University?

Some allow you todo access courses in order to get you upto the required standard for a degree.

Access courses are for students returning to education after a break and allow students to build up study skills and recieve recognition for the transferable life skills built up during their years out in the big wide world so it wouldn't be appropriate for the OP at all. And all Universities allow entry to people with access, not some.

If you are reffering to foundations they are quite different than access. They are appropriate for people continuing from further into higher education and allow them to gain a broad basic knowledge in a particular subject area as a foundation to studying it at degree level. They typically allow students who have A-levels or GNVQ to change direction somewhat. For example, you might do a foundation in mechanical engineering if you have A-levels but not maths so can't be accepted direct to the course.

You wouldn't necessarily be accepted to a foundation without english GCSE A-C and if you were the foundation course itself would not make up for that lack. You would probably be required to study for a basic level certificate in english alongside the foundation in order to pass the course.

I agree with the others. You should re-take the GCSE now.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet... they can change the name, but we all know they're polytechnics.

If you have the chance to retake it where you are I would go for it.

  • As far as I remember a grade C is a requirement for courses, that's a C in language, not literature :)

Actually, even a C is no great achievement. Command of the English language is a fundamental skill for study, and for most of the things you will need to do in your life. I suggest that you seize the opportunity and develop your skills to the highest level that you can -- the time and effort that you invest in this will be repaid many times over.
  • The Essential minimal GCSEs are Math’s and English. No one gives a hoot about English lit. in the long term.

I would certainly retake your English GCSE - it will put your grade up to an acceptable standard for future employment
