Transfering GBP to USD

Hi, I'm not sure this is the right place for this but I hope it is :-)
My wife is a US citizen and we need to transfer a large sum (around $17,000 USD) of money we have saved up to a US bank account to pay off her student loan.
I know that with this sum a lot will depend on when we do it as exchange rates fluctuate and how we do it to avoid fees etc.. it will be a one time transaction and we will be doing it mid September I guess, does anyone have any advise they can please give us?
Thanks in advance :-)

Using a currency broker usually turns out cheapest - sorry I don't know enough about them to recommend one.0

Google 'personal foreign currency exchange' and you'll get a few options...best speak to a few of them as the prices/rates can vary quite a bit0

There used to be a forex broker experience thread on here somewhere.
Found it.
