It will depend on whats wrong with it. If its just ware and tear and you only have a normal Household policy then you will not be able to, as HH policies dont normally cover for appliance warranty.
What you probabley will be able to claim for is the loss of the food inside.
Hope this helps.I'm no expert, but i'll give you my opinion, my support and my experience. Its all i have.

How do they decide if it is wear and tear?
what has happened is the freezer seems to have stopped working properly and the fridge is currently sitting at a balmy 14C!! Would that be wear and tear because it is around 7 years old?0 -
If it goes wrong would the food be covered though?
I would just ring them Doucam and see what they say.... such rubbish eh! I had to replace mine last year, think the washer might be the next thing to go!!The worst cliques are those which consist of one man ~ George Bernard Shaw

Unfortunatley yes. Worth calling just in case, but dont get hopes up. The food limits under a policy are normally a minimum of £500. Obviously depends on what you have in there and what you could prove. (not all insurers even ask for proof (receipts/photo's etc), if its realistic and believable)
Good Luck and let me know if you need any advise.
I've seen them all
