Clematis propagating

Hi, I am new to this board and would welcome some advice. I have just taken a load of fuschsia cuttings and planted them in those little tray things -sorry dont know the technical term - so that I can grow more fuchsias. I was wanting to do the same with my clematis but when i checked it seems this should be done in June.

have I missed the boat for this year?

thanks :)

You are presumably going to keep the fuchsia cuttings indoors or in a greenhouse so if you treat the clematis cuttings in the same way some should grow. Most clematis grow very easily from cuttings - did you let the clematis flowers go to seed? Plant the seeds in potting compost as soon as they are ripe and they should grow. I have grown tangutica and macropetala clematis from seeds off neighbours plants in this way.
If I'm over the hill, where was the top?

Thanks, will probably stick to the cuttings. Yes, the fuchsias are indoors - but how long should I keep them there? At some point they will need to be transferred from their tiny trays into pots I guess...

Clematis cuttings are slightly different to normal. take the cutting about 1" below the leaf node on a semi ripe stem. Dip in hormone powder and place around the edge of a pot filled with a 50-50 mix peat/coarse sand(not building sand) cover with pierced plastic bag, held up with 3-4 small canes, and put in good light, not full sun. should root in about 6-8 weeks. cuttings taken now would still (probably) have time to root if in a warm place.

Thanks. Are you saying that after 6-8 weeks I could plant them outside? Cos that is going to be October (ooh, clever me!)

  • No, it'll have too few roots then. Keep them over winter in a frost free place and plant out when frost is clear and growth is progressing.

Be better in somewhere frost free, and with some light cos we all forget sometimes and some light will keep them going next spring.
