TVs are worse than mattresses in terms of posts on forums!

Mate, work out how much you can afford to spend, then go down the shop and buy one that looks best to you! Find a shop that will let you (I suggest Richer Sounds), take a couple of DVDs along (or Blu-Rays, if you have them) and play them on the shop equipment.

Try to pick DVDs that you know reasonably well and try picking ones which have scenes that have lots of black, scenes with lots of colours, and scenes with lots of motion.

Then pick the screen that looks best to you.

Don't bother going for a screen that is advertised as being better. Don't bother going for what other people try to sell you or get you to buy - watch the TV, see what you think is best. It's too personal to go on someone else's recommendations.

Well, we did exactly this, I think we went to three shops in total. I personally can't tell the differences, they all look miles better than our old CRT in it's current state.

But again, it's magnolia against off-white, I just can't say I see enough difference between those pesky LCD's and their LED so called LCD's. I do have feeling tho that what ever we get will not outlive the CRT (like all the other cr*p coming to the shops now days I suppose).

Mind you, we don't watch DVD'd, it is mostly channels 1 to 5 with some BBC 4 all on a Freesat box as we don't have Freeview (We do want to watch iPlayer on this box but the top speed broadband is one meg in our street and the picture is very pixely), we simply don't have time for more than that.

We saw the said Samsung on display locally and it was almost £200 more than Ebuyer, when it comes to this I can defiantly tell the difference :D

What size do you want? I've only ever seen one plasma under 37 inches, so if you want 26/32 It's a moot point.

  • Set yourself a budget, lets say £400. You have been used to a 26" CRT from 1998, ANYTHING produced in the last 5 years is going to be beautiful in comparison. You have already mentioned you cannot see the difference between the LCD/LED (plasma?) screens, and I can safely assume you have never seen anything at 720p before, let alone 1080p due to your CRT. All my TV's in the house are LG, because I have found them to be a cheap yet quality and long lasting brand.

    My 2 pence worth : http://www.ebuyer.com/product/210132

My similar but less well specced LG 32" from getting on for 4 years old now is still going strong and I would recommend anyone to the brand :) No doubt you can find that TV above cheaper somewhere else but its there for comparison. If you NEED the security of a warranty by it from John Lewis, unless its changed you get a 5 year guarantee as standard?

Whilst some of that is true, standard definition will actually look better on a CRT (plasma being next best) obviously HD stuff will look great, but unless op is buying Sky HD, freesat or a BluRay, which is entirely possible, it won't necessarily be a better PQ
