Protected No claims discount

Hi
I have 6 years protected no claims discount.
In the last year I made a claim for a hit and run which made my car a right-off. I insured another car on the same policy, and now my policy is up for renewal.
The insurer has told me that my 6 years NCB are protected, however my NCB will remain at 6 years. Is this correct?
If my NCB is protected, shouldnt I have 7 years now on renewal (As I had 6 years when I took out the policy)?
Please help.
Thanks in advance.

Your level has been protected. They are saying you cannot be awarded any for this year (as you have made a claim).
But going from 6 to 7 would make little difference to the discount - maybe none at all, depending on how long your insurer keeps adding on an extra year's discount after you hit the normal max (for discount purposes) of 5 years.
Were you not protected, you would have had 3 years at renewal (going down 2 years from the max of 5)0 -
did you know you can still claim via the MIB and get your no claims an excess back0
