Section 75 Protection for Large order

Just wondering what the best way to get CCA protection (particularly section 75) when ordering from over seas is?

Need to order goods costing ~ 2000 euro's (well above my credit cards limit)

Read about cash plus (pre-paid cards that cover you)

Any one use these for international transactions? Very much open to suggestions / alternatives people have used for such transactions..

You get section 75 protection provided you pay at least a £100 deposit with the credit card. The rest of the balance doesn't have to be paid on the card to get the protection.

Not sure about the overseas protection question though, hopefully someone else will come along shortly to answer that for you.
  • If it is a business transaction you won't get S 75 cover.

Thats brings an interesting question.. My understanding was that the cover was for goods over 100£ paid by credit card. Need to research this a bit.

Also, this is not a business transaction. Im buying goods from a store via the phone.

Just rang natwest who said that i would only be covered to what my card limit was. Is this true or the woman was just bull !!!!!!!!!

It is bull - as long as the transaction is a private one within £100 and £30000 you may be covered.
You only have to put a £1 on the credit card to get the cover.
  • This might be a stupid question but

Does that still apply if I pay 1£ deposit.. and the rest by cash / cheq or other means?

Yes, the MSE article specifically states this

The rationale behind S.75 seems to be that a bank provided the means to a merchant to sell things, accepting credit cards. Therefore, the merchant must be ready to sell everything they sell by credit only (even though they will typically frown upon accepting cards for thousands), thus anything they sell via part credit is forced to (well, sort of) belong to the bank.

If the merchant does something bad, your bank should take the item from you, return it to the merchant (or their bank), refund you (in total!), and let the thing be sorted out between the merchant and their bank. There's a reason companies/merchant are credit checked as well
    Enjoy the silence...

" Whether section 75 applies to transactions abroad is a matter of dispute."
