Warranty on TV

Options
Hi, i need help on a 4 year warranty which i bought along with my compulsory 1 year guarantee. I bought a digital TV on March of last year and took a 4 year warranty out at the same time.
The TV broke 2 weeks ago in which my 1 year guarantee ran out but i was 4 months into the 4 year warranty so i was covered with the £200 i paid for the warranty.
The engineer turns up and takes the TV away and informs me by phone that the repair bill will be £700 for a £570 tv. They said it would not be worth fixing and offered me a lesser tv which i cannot find any info on the internet about and to make matters worse they said that my £200 warranty would then be invalid.
I have phoned them but they seem to be of the opinion that as the tv cant be fixed and there offer of a new tv is basically a lump it or leave it attitude. With 3 years 8 months left on my warranty they are saying that it will be void if i accept the new tv. I`m having no choice or say in this matter and they want £50 for delivery should i accept the lesser tv .£200 for 4 months warranty?

as its still under warranty they should fix it the fact that its costing £700 should make no difference thats what you paid the extra for at the time of the sale, id tell them to fix it they are just trying to save themselves money by offering a lower priced tv, they say it cant be fixed now ? but told you it will cost £700 tell them you paid for a 4yr warranty its under that warranty you want it fixed i wouldnt accept the tv for all we know in a years time when the warranty on the new tv is up the same thing could happen and you have no tv no warranty zilch basically, of course this is just my opinion ...

That quite depends on the terms of the warranty. If its uneconomical to repair I'm sure there would be a condition to allow for a like-for-like replacement instead.

Recommend you dig out the terms of the warranty agreement. If what they are offering is in line with that then it certainly doesn't sound like a good warranty policy, but I doubt they're infringing your rights by it.

Possibly worth complaining to whoever sold you the warranty policy for misrepresentation of it's cover? Depends on what you were told really. That may be the best bet. Or possibly the warranty company for unfair terms, both definitely wouldn't be an easy option though. You might just have to end up putting it down to experience. No harm contacting all the parties concerned though and seeing what they say.

Check the T&Cs as first port of call to double-check they're not trying to pull a fast one!

I think I would be going back to where I bought the tv from.

It is probably reasonable to expect a £570 tv to last longer than sixteen months.

The Sale of Goods Act will be worth looking at.

Try and get a report from the current repairer stating that it is an inherent fault, as you will/may need to prove this to your retailer.

    Who is the retailer?
