Reading to Sheffield : Via M1 or M40?
I am driving from Reading to Sheffield at the weekend (day time).
Looked at both AA and RAC route planner, one advising to take M4-->M25-->M1 and other M4-->A404-->M40-->A43-->M1.
The distance more or less is the same on both routes, I am just curious as to which route should I take with the view to avoid any potential traffic jam. Any ideas?

Try this route:
Reading -> A4->A404-> High Wycombe -> A4128-> Aylesbury ->> A418->Wing->Stewkley->Newton Longville->Bletchley-> Milton Keynes -> M1 (J13 or J14)
I used to drive from MK to Bracknell and back as my daily commute, and via High Wycombe/Aylesbury was the quickest route."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -
you mean once, or regularly?
a bit shorter, you can go northwards out of Reading, either via B roads to Watlington to join the M40 at Lewknor, or on the A4074 via Dorchester to the west side of the Oxford bypass
further north, as well as using the A43 to cut across from the M40 to the M1, I'd also consider the A46 and M69 past Coventry to Leicester, or the M42 and A42
I haven't been up that part of the M1 recently, but if the road works are still in the Nottingham and Mansfield area, then even the A38 is worth considering
if it's during the time of day likely to be affected, I'd take a look at the football fixtures and bear those in mind
p.s. I forgot to say - on Google Maps to can click and drag the route to help experiment with different variations0 -
The roadworks have gone from the M1 in Notts and it's now quad lanes. I drive this route all the time and the usual route would be M4-->A404-->M40-->M42-->M6TOLL-->A38-->M1 (A38 takes you to Jct 28 on the M1). If you don't want to pay the toll then M42-->A42-->M1. I wouldn't bother with the A43, too many roundabouts that slow you down.553780080

M4, A34, A43, M1. Well at least that's the way we used to go when night trunking from Howden to Reading. Worked out the quickest of both routes even though much of the A43 was still single carriageway at the time.0 -
Thanks everyone for your valuable replies, I guess it is definately via M40 then.
As I am near Junction 10 will take M4->High Wycombe->M40-->M10 -
avoid the M25 at the moment I got stuck on there today for nearly an hour just due to the road works go M40 then cut acrossNothing to see here, move along.0
