satnav and city centers

Can anyone tell me how to make my Garmin Nuvi 225w satnav find city centers as opposed to entering a street or post code.
If I'm going to Derby I'd look for a post code for the place I want to go. If later I wanted to go to Ashbourne town center, it appears to only give a street name option and without knowing what the town center street name is (high st) is a good guess but quite often no where near.
Can any one help this is driving me up the wall. Well to some unexpected places.

I know that Garmin have changed the user interface on the Nuvis a few times, but if you choose Where To, and then go to the second menu page, do you not get the Cities option? If I select that and then Spell, and put in Derby, the second entry down is Derby, Derbyshire, and that points to a nominally central point in Derby.

You can also use a completely different method: Choose View Map, zoom out, drag the map view with your finger until you are looking at your destination city, zoom in and find a suitable location in the centre, tap that location and select Go. It will then navigate you to the location you tapped on.
