Hi,
I am off on a family holiday next month to France. However we are now finding out that in order to book a hire car we need to use a credit card at time of collection. We do not have a credit card and our credit rating is awful.
We are not looking to use the credit card as a means of getting into debt its simply to use for collecting the hire car.
We are staying a 3hr drive away from the airport so we need a hire car.
Can anyone help me find a credit card that would accept poor credit please?

Hi,
You can try Vanquis or the Capital One Classic which are for people with poor credit, or Aqua Credit Card. Your probably only get a small credit limit to start with though.
hope this helps.Offically Debt Free as of 27th May 2009.

Try Vanquis, Aqua or Capital One (in that order, the first 2 offer higher initial Credit Limits while Capital One may only start you off with £100).
Alternatively if you get refused then Try Cashplus Prepaid Mastercard. You will need to credit the card first and ring their customer services up before you go but they can Activate the Prepaid Card for Use with Car Hire. :cool:0 -

Is this the one you have to pay £5.99 a month for? I have a quick question regarding that, if I just load it with the £80 for the year, or whatever it is, can I pay it using that? Do you know what I mean? Like credit the card with £80 to pay for the card, then just not use it? Will it improve my credit rating?0 -
thankyou so much for everyones helpful ideas. I am going to have a look at the pre pay credit card coz if that works with hiring a car then thats much better than pulling out a credit card.
Ill let use know how I get on0 -
Barclaycard have such a credit card too, and the interest rate isn't as bad as the competition, if memory serves.
Vanquis are awful. Their interest rates are the highest in the industry.0 -
However the Barclaycard is more strictly scored. A friend of mine who holds a Vanquis, Capital One Classic, and Aqua card (£2,500, £400, and £750 limits respectively) was declined for the barclaycard initial despite having 36 months flawless credit history and a reasonable income.Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

Just phoned up the cash plus pre pay mastercard and asked if I got one of these cards could I use it in France to hire a car. My response was I would need to wait a month to see what the system will allow me to do. Apparently the system updates every 21 days and depending on criteria (probably how long you have had the card) then you will be allowed to do more with it. In complete they cannot guarantee me usage of the card to hire a car abroad next month but also cannot confirm that I wouldnt!0

The card to get for use abroad is the FairFX card.
Again it is prepaid and not credit scored, but usage abroad is free with the Mastercard FX exchange rates, not the card companies own manufactured rates so you're getting the best deal on that, too.
