Heading to Rome - cheap restaurants and bars??

Options
Hi all

Me and the other half are heading to Rome at the end of the month - we are staying at a hotel near Termini station.

Any good resonable restaurants or bars that you can recommend??

  • There are loads of restaurants in the streets around/between the pantheon trevi fountain and piaza navona. Most of then do a tourist menus, something like bruscetta pizza and a drink for 8 euros. One night we had a 'fancy' tourist menu, pasta with seafood, swordfish and pots, creme caramel for 16 euro. If you are looking just for basic food and not fancy stuff the tourist menus are perfect. We found restaurants around the vatican very dear, inside the vatican was much more reasonable.
Around termini, we stayed on via marsala, there are wee cafes that sell slices of pizza by weight very cheap but again not fancy, prob same standarad as our 'greasy spoon'.
You can buy water snacks wine and beer at the supermarket on the underground floor at termini. We bought a litre of wine for about 1 euro and took it back to drink at b and b! Goin again in march next year and can't wait!

There's a great independent travel section in the New York Times called Frugal Times originally written by Matt Gross and there is an archive of excellent material.

    Here's the one on Rome.

Don't forget to read the comments on the articles as well as these also carry a wealth of first-hand information.

we booked a top scret hotel with last minute.com which was ok, but a little far out of the centre!

Rome is great, just go VERY early to get into the Vatican!

I saw the secret ones, but wasn't sure if i should go for it or not. Which one did you end up with ?

We stayed in hotel near Termini, it was Villa Franca, booked with easyjet holidays, very good price with flights, hotel excellent, breakfast amazing and close to Termini, where you can catch buses and subway to everywhere.
Restaurant I recommend Dar Poeta:-) They do best ever calzone pizza stuffed with nutella and riccota:-)

If you want a rest and a drink/bite as you wend your weary way back to your hotel the "Irish' pub at the top of Via Nazionale is good.

It's nothing like a cliched Irish bar BTW.

For a treat try Gioa Mia just off Piazza Barberini. Great atmosphere and great food. Not expensive.

We were twice in Pizzeria Pretoriana it is 2 minutes walk from Termini in Via Pretoria. Very nice and cheap pizza and wine.
