you need an antivirus. suggest you install a free one such as Avira or Avast, which are good. someone will post links no doubt :)

    or microsoft security essentials.

you can find these easily thru google

Thanks for your help. Is windows own firewall ok. Think i will download microsoft securty essantials, most of you techie peaople say its ok. Do i need to download malwarebytes anti-malware or any thing else. I also keep getting a pop-up when i turn on asking if i want windows 8.

Avast is really good and I use it for all my family and friends computers. As above said just google it and go for the free option. One more expensive option is Eset Smart Security. It really is the bees knees and you wont have any trouble with it. Its about £30-£40 per year per licence depending on where you get it but is good.

Personally if you just want the basics and aren't going to be surfing through the more "dodgy" looking sites. You will be fine with Avast!
Going into last year of uni. What to do next?
  • hmmm... windows 8 eh? sounds mighty suspicious. i would indeed download malwarebytes antimalware, update and run a scan - remove anything highlighted as dodgy. but get that antivirus on quick too!

especially before visiting any potentially unsound websites ;)

Windows 8? or Internet Explorer 8?

Obviously without seeing the pop-up your getting this could be the "Browser Check" that MS were legally forced to instigate as part of their copetition clauses.

This is in the form of a pop-up asking you if you want to keep IE8 or install Chrome, Firefox Opera and a thousand other msaller browsers (or so it seems)
