I been busing banging on for weeks about my tomatoes not ripening.

I went out this morning and spotted a little beut with a definate orange tinge about it. I ran in the house to drag the OH to come and look.. I pointed to it touching it lightly and the little blighter fell off :(

oh noes! stick it on a windowsill, preferably near a banana or some other ripe tomatoes (maybe shop bought?) and it should redden up nicely.

I was investigating the first pinky tomatoes on my alicantes yesterday - they are seriously overloaded - when one whole plant just collapsed on me. I got 3.5kg of green tomatoes off it, think I will be making chutney this weekend! I do have 4 more plants so hoping they make it to ripeness before getting too heavy for the complex arrangement of canes and string holding them up.

You don't know your own strength :D

As MM says you can ripen it inside, now it's started ripening, it should do the rest with just sunlight.

You say little blighter, is it that's it's small, or is that just a term? I'm trying to work out why it fell off, they should normally only do that when they are completely ripe.

  • I've had quite a few fall off the trusses well before they have started to ripen.

And some of the trusses have leaves on them too - is this usual as I've never known this to happen before?

On some varieties it's quite normal, you want to take them off, well I always do anyway.

Funnily enough, I just had a look right underneath some of the plants and I found 2 or 3 fully ripened toms. The downside is that when I tried one it was a bit mushy OMG, I hope this isn't the sign of things to come, I have been waiting so long. Thank heavens I have 2 varieties.
