Personalised Plates

My son was given a set of personalised number plates for his 21st birthday and the people who bought them said they had paid the special £80 fee. Is it right that he has to pay over £100 to keep the old plates, (already on the car) so that he can put them back on when he eventually sells the car?

I've checked the DVLA website where the plates were bought, but I can't see that it tells you anything.

Hope this makes sense!

Not sure what the current fee is, but yes, if he wants to do that he will need to pay, and pay a retention fee every year as well (£25).

The alternative is to re-register the car when he sells it on, but there will be a fee for that as well.

If the transfer fee has been paid then he needs to do nothing more than send the paperwork off to the DVLA - the old plate is put back on (and you pay for doing so) when you transfer the plate to a new car or put it on retention - you pay for this when you do it, not now.

Thank you! He might have left University and be working by the time he sells his car.
