Hiya,
My mate runs her own small business and she says she gets a fantastic response to ads in her local freebie magazine that gets delivered through doors.
It has has dramatic impact on her website hits (her site is prominently displayed in ad) as well as the number of phone calls/bookings.

thanks everyone so far i've done:
adwords
keywords from my website
yell.com (chargeable service)
opened a group on facebook
bought a CPC advert on facebook
done free listings on thomaslocal, clasifiedsuk, touchlocal, viva street, free index.
my plans are also to write to the radio stations and newspapers to see if they are interested in doing interviews.0 -
Why is your business? If it's cakes you could send the radio station LOADS and maybe they'd mention you0

networking / word of mouth
basically i live in a small village , i made it a mission to make sure as many people in the village knew what i did , so i got involved with fundraising for various groups / schools that my kids were involved with and with the church , and other village events / groups etc and had a sign written van
it was a lot of hard work and took around 8 years , but now i don't advertise at all and have to turn work away or they have to go on a waiting list0 -
word of mouth is the only method of bringing in lots of new customers for free!, yes free!, do a good job or offer a good service and can mean miles of great business.Kind Regards

Ive had a lot of success using Gumtree so maybe give them a try?
Make sure you post in the morning and get the right category but otherwise had a very good ROI.
