Item iv sold arrived damaged :(

Hey guys, i started selling some of my junk on ebay a few weeks ago and it all went fine, but i got back from visiting friends and while i was down there i bought two mirrors which i found werent big enough, so i put them on ebay to get my money back as i didnt have a store up here to return them to.

However, today i'v had a message saying the mirror has arrived broken and asked what to do :( I wasnt sure, so iv just asked the buyer to return the items for me to check and then give a refund. I sent the items 1st class recorded, wraped in plenty of bubble wrap and a Fragile Handle With Care lable on them, How much can i claim back from royal mail? Can i claim what i paid for them and how much i sold them for? Otherwise il have a broken mirror that i cannot re-sell and be out of pocket :(

Hope you can help guys.
Dont think il be selling on ebay again
J

You wont be able to claim off royal mail as they wont cover glass i'm afraid you'll have to take the loss.
  • Couple of points: returning a broken mirror isn't on - most couriers if not Royal Mail have a rule against sending broken glass for obvious reasons. You'd be better asking for a photo to be sure it is broken and let the buyer dispose of it safely.

I'm not sure how you'd get on with trying to claim from Royal Mail, but you have to try ... maybe check out their website (https://www.royalmail.com) and it should give details of what's covered for the postage method you used. Beware the 'insufficient packaging' argument, by the way - I'm sure RM are better than some couriers I've dealt with who decide that if something broke then the packaging was at fault (even if there's fork-lift tiretracks over it -- and yes this has happened )

For my sins, at work we sometimes need to ship mirrors. It's a nightmare, and not worth even trying (but try telling that to the boss :( ). You might as well give the courier a tenner and throw the mirror straight in the bin, you get the same result.

Don't let it put you off eBay, just shipping mirrors ;)

As i said above RM 1st class does not cover mirrors or Glass
  • I know, asking for broken glass to be returned wasnt the best idea but i paniced as i wasnt sure what to do, i had a look at royal mail and cyber bob is right, the wont allow a claim for glass :(

When i refund the item, will i get back what was deductd by paypal to recieve the money in the first place or will i the owe that to paypal and be even more out of pocket?

    Thanks for your help guys

Just refund the original paypal payment (in full remember) and your fees go back with it.

Once you have refunded the buyer (lots of apologies are also a good idea) you can ask them to do a mutual to get your ebay fees back as well.
