My OP was rather long, but at the end of it I did include a link from an older MSE thread which mentions some of the similar free software packages available on the net. I thought this was a good offer, and I also know that a lot of my friends are not pc experts but are also really worried about the security and safety of their home pc's for the whole family. When I've spoken to them, they generally feel more confident buying a well known software package from a retailer than downloading from the net.

Avast! is another legal and free antivirus software - I have been using for over a year now and very happy with it. I am actually cancelling my Mcafee now and use only these onces as they do equally the same work and even better sometimes.

I use Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic.
It is completely FREE and much better than AVG.

I once bought Nero 7 Premium for around £5 from there which turned out to be a pirated copy as did some other MSE members. 7dayshop had unknowingly bought them pirated from one of their suppliers, they issued refunds when the product was were returned.
I'd make sure this is genuine software when you receive it. Also McAfee will probably slow your system down as will Norton, try Avg (http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01) or AntiVir PE (https://www.free-av.com) which are both free and do not slow your system down.0 -
            ok people quick tip...
AVG antivirus is free (or quite cheap maybe a tenner) and is real good and doesnt hog a lot of resource like the main players.
nero 7 lots of people have problems with it. stick with version 6.6. stable and reliable.

the best anti-viri on the market is nod32 by eset. It download new defs each day (somethime 2/3 times). so is always upto date. Take virtually no system resources and has caught every single viri ive encountered on my pc. I've used it now for around 2 years.. Used to use macafee then moved to norton.. They are nowhere near nod32 in terms of performance and catching viri.=======================
