Expecting a NPB... What to do?

I have an item listed on ebay, which is due to end today. It is an edition of a core legal text, recently superceeded by a new edition. Edition on sale is well highlighted.

I got a bid on it on day 1. The next day the bidder sent me an email saying he needs the new edition: "sorry i have bid on the wrong book, recieved my study materiels today and they have been updated from the information i was given, i hope this does not bother you to mutch. sorry again"

I emailed him back saying he needs to physically retract the bid. He hasn't. I haven't heard anything from him.

As a result I've not been able to alter the description in any way, shape of form, lower the price etc. to encourage new bids.

What would you do? All he had to do was retract and he hasn't, locking me out of my own item. Rather !!!!!! off actually.

Any suggestions gratefully received...

When the buyer emailed you I personally would have pulled his bid at that point, I can see no reason why you left his bid to stand.

All you can do is go through the NPB but expect a neg from buyer as he was upfront about not wanting the item. Many buyers do not realise they can remove their own bids, likewise many sellers are not aware that they can either.

I thought that bids could be cancelled by the seller as well.

I was told elsewhere that they had to file a bid retraction (which is whay I asked him to do)... I didn't want to pull the item, which is what I was told I would have to do otherwise as I didn't want to lose my listing fee...

A seller can pull any bids they want, as you were not aware of that it is easy to see how the buyer may also have made an incorrect assumption that you would pull the bid, and he possibly hasn't even logged in since to confirm you did so.

You don't, incidentally, need to cancel the auction to cancel a bid, in fact you can't even close an auction when you have a bid unless you pull that bid first.

If the auction closes with this buyer as the winner you will lose your listing fees and possibly your FVFs unless you do an NPB on him and risk a neg.

Would it be seen as my responsibility to do this though? From the users feedback he has a 'history' of bidding on things and not checking them out, and backing out after auction has ended...

I've wasted 7 days of listing, thanks to him too...

And I still have no idea how to cancel a bid - there's no area in the item listing for this...

Also, he has been on ebay since, so has just chosen to ignore my message...

  • Click on site map. Under the heading selling activities it says cancel bids on your listing, click that and follow the instructions.

technically it was up to the buyer to cancel his own bid, however a seller gains nothing at all by allowing a bid to stand when the buyer has indicated they have changed their mind.

OK, cool. My last concern is that he doesn't actually say 'please cancel my bid', although it does seem implicit.

What if he's changed his mind, realised that there isn't much difference between the edition he's bid on and the new one, and is happy with the bid to remain. Will he have any come back at me if I cancel his bid?

Thanks all - I cancelled the bid, and have another bid on it now too :)
