I want to set up a joint current account fro my mum and myself so I can act on her behalf to pay bills etc.It is essential to have direct debit facility for utility bills and I would like to earn some interest albeit at todays meagre rates. Two obvious candidates are the Chelsea Classic and the Leeds Albion; I have the CC and it does me fine.Anything obvious which I may have overlooked
please?

The bank account article should answer your questions: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/compare-best-bank-accounts
There are a variety that pay interest (though usually only for a limited period) and often have cash incentives to open them.0 -
Coventry First 1.1% for the first year but no cheque book.

In the end I opted for both the Santander current and the Tesco online as a feed account.I can use the Santander to feed back transfers to the Tesco and qualify for the inducement of £1000

That is a pathetic excuse. You can open an account online and switching is VERY easy just one form to fill in."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

I am considering switching my current account to Santander. Are they covered by the UK Bank Guarantee Scheme?0

As already posted, "just can't be bothered" is no excuse for not moving accounts. That's exactly the attitude they rely on!
If, as you state, you "always have a few k" (kilo or £1000s pounds presumably?) then open and maintain £5000-£7000 balance in a LloydsTSB current a/c with "Vantage" and earn 4%.:)
In theory, no need to do anything yourself - http://www.lloydstsb.com/current_accounts/switching_bank_account_to_ltsb.asp0 -
If you don't want to move your banking can you just set up an extra account with your normal bank stick one SO on it and use this account for the switch leaving your real banking in place?0
-
Being picky I know, but I'm fairly sure the account has to have a DIRECT DEBIT, not just a standing order, on it to qualify for the switch ....(for Santanmder anyway....)0
