my original 1.5tb has now been set back to ebuyer, so i should get my replacement 1.5tb drive soon.
As for the 1tb I was using to copy the files from the 1.5tb TO, that belongs to my nephew, i didnt format it thats how it was bought, IT arrived formatted to Fat32 its a WD My book external drive, which he got for christmas about 3 years ago.
I had a system LOCKUP, when i was moving files from my 1.5tb to the 1tb drive. I had to, nothing was responding. I had to press the reset button, which it why the 1tb got corrupted. it was working perfectly when i checked it before the lockup, 20 folders in the root before, 4 folders with crazy names afterwards.
I already have hirens boot, i've been using those cd's for years.
None of the files i was moving to the drive where bigger than 4gb.
The 1.5tb drive was FAULTY, according to WD Data Lifeguard the error code was 0007 which has something to do with SMART, Hardware failure.
but able to access the files, but only getting depending where the data was stored on it, 10kb-22mb transfer using Teracopy.
Still running a CHKDSK /R on external drive. Which i expect to be finished sometime either Sunday or maybe late Saturday, as suggest by the first response.
Hoping that I will be able to get back most of the data using that method. If not, it will be turned off, and left until my 1.5tb turns up, then i'll be using FileScavenger to see what that can get back.
As for burning dvd's theres no problem burning dvd's, except for prices, I decided i wasnt going to burn a dvd at the current price of them after they had gone up from 12.99 per 100disc to 16.99, so waited for either a price drop or offer to show, I was in the process of burning DVD's when my drive started to fail. I had burned 26 in 2 days. but once you have burned thats it, dvd is used, keep it on drive, you can overwrite it.
With all the HDD i've got, and except for the WD failing on my, I will never buy another WD drive again, I'll be sticking to Samsung of which i have 2, 3 maxtors and 1 hitachi. all of which are FULL. I did have a fujitsu but after 8/9 years that died, but 8/9 years and in use everyday, not 8months like the WD drive.
to answer patman answers The drive had my nephews data on it before i borrowed it, so formatted was out of the question.0 -

As far as relying on a single hard drive for backup purposes, you may as well give whatever the drive cost you to the bookie....at least that way you stand a chance of making something out of it.
If you are serious about data retention with redundancy, you need to look at RAID 1 minimum - and RAID 5 if you want to do the job properly.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -

I've been building and upgrading computers for over 20 years and have yet to have had a WD drive fail. In fact one 40MB (yes, megabyte) one I had I once tried to destroy by driving over it with my 38 tonne lorry. It still works and I now hold onto it for sentimental reasons.:D0 -

All makers have !
The first worst one ever was the IBM Deskstar, this was so bad it quickly became known internationally as the DeathStar [ google deathstar drive ] as KillerWatt says they all take their turn, 2 years ago people were using the same phrase asking if Seagate was the new 2008 version of the DeathStar ?
Even only a sort few years ago drives were 3 or 4 quid a GiG, they are now about 50p a GiG and should be seen for what they are - a disposable priced bit~of~kit. Drive mortality [ not MTBF ] however should be anticipated from day one. No one can be too overcautious on at least a diligent weekly backup of important stuff, failure to do so will always result in the famous phrase '' why me - why now ''Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. piece of advice to anyone in the same predictement i'm in, DONT USE CHKDSK /R to recover. i must have had over 1million files on that drive, 155gb of movies i know for a fact, after running the chkdsk /R for 3 days i have got back 10,000 files of which 97% of them are 32kb in filesize, so thanks to the IDIOT than suggested that idea which i now see they've removed. Wish i left it until i had my replacement 1.5tb drive and then used File Scavenger which could see the files on the HDD before running it, with the filename and file sizes, now thanks to the CHKDSK am unable to see past the 10,000 recovered. Last time i come here some advice.

andy2004, my friend reference your quote "" after running the chkdsk /R for 3 days i have got back 10,000 files of which 97% of them are 32kb in filesize, so thanks to the IDIOT than suggested that idea "" the only mention of chkdsk in this thread is your own in your original #1
I realise you are well kissed off with your situation, I certainly would be if I was suffering the same fate, but I can't find anyone who told / advised you to use chkdsk other than your good self. If I've missed a reference please point me in the right direction.
I did predict the fate of anyone trying to copy let alone move anything bigger than 80Mins/700MB here: 12-08-2010 5:29 PM. and most if not all of your movies were each going to be bigger than 80Mins/700MB, it gives me no pleasure whatsoever in telling you you dug your own hole and were unable to get out of it by letting yourself get into the ' no backup ' situation in the first place.
I do however feel sure you personally will have learned from the lesson and many many other people will, because you made your original post - benefit from having read this thread, and may themselves avoid your fate.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion.
