santander debit card in spain

buenas :-)

I'm off to spain and have a santander debit card.Santander tell me that there's no additional charges for withdrawing euros in spain, but I'm not sure whether thay offset this by giving you a bad rate...

Does anyone have any advice?

I have just received a confirmation email from Santander customer services about this. No charges at all as long as you withdraw from a Santander ATM and ask for transaction to be processed in euros. You get the local rate ie if the rate at the time of withdrawing is 1.17 euros to the £ that's what you'll receive. However if you withdraw across a Santander branch counter or use a different bank's ATM then you will be charged the usual handling fees. Simple really - just find a Santander branch with it's own ATM outside and no charges.
I'm off to Spain in a couple of weeks so will report back.

I came across this thread because I want to know the situation as well. Do they inflate the exchange rate to make a profit or is this a bona fide perk of banking with a Spanish bank? I'm off to Spain in 2 weeks and thinking of getting all my euros from an ATM if the exchange rate is ok.

Having read the fees section of the T&C it's a genuine perk - no fee, no markup

I just withdrew 20 euros today as a test. Will see when I check my statement. I have used a visa debit card from a business account, though.
