Laptop woes

I have a laptop which came with windows 7. I have had to disable updates, as it gets stuck part way through windows updates.

Not sure whether I should install SP1 or do something else?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

No SP1 for 7 yet, more info needed.

    What happens is this:

I run updates (or it auto-ran as it happened).
Some of the updates install okay, as it shuts down, the 'hour glass' freezes. So I have to manually turn off and on the laptop. On turning on, it appears to be running the install for updates. Windows loads. Some updates show as pending. It then decides it needs to reboot and gets stuck again, ie. freezes again. I had to restore to the original installation and since then have turned off updates.

The recovery option works from the hard drive.
  • how long are you leaving it before you power down? more patience may help...

    what laptop is it?
    Friendly greeting!
  • It could be that Windows Update has discovered that an update has been corrupted on download and its trying to either realise this or fix it. Manually forcing a shut down via the Power button during ANY type of install (including updates) is not recommended as it could corrupt Windows and prevent it booting.

As you have done a clean install, maybe you should download available updated manually one by one and see if any of them cause issue.

Could it be that the update requires administrator priviledges and that you are not responding to a request of a password (or acknoledgement). If you are not using the Administrator account to do the update, maybe try that?

Can't say I have had that issue yet on either my laptop (Win 7 Home Prem 64 Bit) or desktop (Win 7 Ult 64 Bit - but running on 32bit arcitecture due to a bios conflict).

Happens all the time, I have run updates on a fresh restore. Same thing happens again.

I have waited half an hour / 1 hour for updates to run.

It is an admin account. Win 7 64bit.

Hi have you tried system restore to this Tuesday before 0600 and the turn off Automatic updates. Then if that is ok then go goto Control Panel / Windows Update - check for updates then select them 1 by one ..pain I know but many of them don't need reboots.

Just an idea :D And if you find out which is hanging let us know.
