Directline insurance canellation charges

I got a email today off Directline to fill a survey out as I have just renewed my policy with them(this is the first time I heard I have done this)as I have recieved no previous emails or policy through the door.Last year I paid in full with a credit card. So I phoned them up to tell them that I had not renewed my policy, and asked how much it would cost to renew. To my surprise it was nearly a £100 more than I paid last year and told them I didn't want it when I was told that the new policy had run for 31 days so I had to pay for that and £50 canellation fee surely they have just robbed. Is there anyway I could claim this back.

    Couple of questions....

1 - If you didnt know it was up for renewal, did you arrange any alternative?

2 - is this motor or household?

I didn't know it was up for renewal. I thought it was from october as thats when I moved in but I bought the house in July last year, I accept that this part is my error. They still should of got in touch to tell me as I paid it last year in one sum so they would not of had any bank details and no I hadn't arranged another one earlier but have now. It was home insurance

Silly question, but as you have moved house and not received any of the letters from DL have they got your new address correctly / did you change it over ?
  • The inital policy went to my old house but it had the new address of the policy insured on. Is it silly of me to assume that when I told directline was moving into this address a year down the line I would not be at my old address

DL are normally not to bad on admin errors (You should see the mistakes some other companies make) however mistakes do happen and it might explain why you never received letters. An Insurer will normally have an insured address and a correspondence address, some Insurers staff forget to change both addresses so the letters go to the old address after someone moves

Try giving them a call, be polite and simply ask "Can you confirm what correspondence address for me and what insured address you have for me". This may answer the question.
