Netbooks

Does anyone know if a netbook is powerful enough to play iPlayer and the like?
Thanks

Yes, as long as it has the right system and specs it will do anything a computer can do.
    Owed out = lots.
  • I have a Samsung NC10 and it's fine with Iplayer and the like.

Most will fall over at 1080i/p (maybe even 720p) except for some of the newer ones with graphics chips. But it's a mixed bag to be honest, videos can be made using various codecs, and different codecs take more or less horsepower to process the video.

iPlayer appears to be relatively easygoing than some of the other codecs.

I suggest picking out a few netbooks you like then googling for some reviews.

IMHO Atom 450s choke on iPlayer HD even with h/w acceleration in Flash 10.1.

    Interesting....

Is that personal experience or just opinion?

Fact. You need the newer ones with the nVidia ION chipset that has HD decoding built in.

I don't think netbooks are really aimed at this type of usage as they are aimed at surfing & email. You might possibly get away with the standard def low res iplayer but for 720p HD iplayer you will definately need discreet graphics not integrated.

The nVidia ION chipset was specifically designed for netbooks and net-tops to provide smooth HD playback

  • My wee samsung runs iplayer/youtube or whatever just fine when plugged in - but stutters and chokes when unplugged (presumably there is some sort of power saving setting for the battery that slows the chip down to keep battery life up).
