Tower probs or cable....

For past 11 days my b.b. has been running ultra slow taking up to 45 mins to connect. The supplier insists its not their fault, but could be two of mine they dont know which:
1) The cable that runs fm lounge to b/room (approx 10m) has become downgraded (3 yrs old) or (2) My tower (8 yrs old) needs to be replaced.

Is there an expert out there who can give me any advice, to which I will be eternally grateful.

Broadband or dial up, USB modem or router, or cable?
    PC operating system?
Extension cables, not a good idea.

    WFAT OP?

  • A pain but the cheapset way to test would be to move your tower pc to your living room and plug it in there. If using ASDL (BT line etc) plug the modem/router into the test socket.

Alternatively try a usb wireless dongle and see if it connects any better to rule out the cable being an issue.

Spot on John - Sky BB did suggest that but I am of a certain age and wont find this easy. But may have no choice in the long run. Many thanks for your prompt reply.

One other question if it is the cable running fm ASDL to router, why therefore does sometimes it takes me 40 odd mins to log on and other times it takes 5 mins? Thanks again...

Does wow mean it should be replaced? BB is my service supplier and yes it does log on every time but sometimes takes over 40 mins and other times 5 mins...thats why I am rather confused. Also, I dont speak computer language. An age thing ;)

Sky - the cable that connects fm BT socket to back room, down the wal and into the router. (ADSL). Hope that helps.
  • wifi dongle may suit, but you'd have to set up wifi, which you might not fancy?

as an example, you could got wireless rather cheaply, e.g.: http://www.amazon.co.uk/ADAPTER-WIRELESS-DONGLE-ADAPTOR-Compatible/dp/B000W4CXCM

anyone else live near you with same BB supplier? are they having similar problems at all? worth checking this out if you can too I reckon.

If possible ethernet cable was got water in it, that would be a problem. does internet run fine once connected?

post in the day if poss, more likely to get a flurry of responses!

  • If it works quickly sometimes but not others it doesn't sound like a cable problem to me, I am using 15 meters of fast modem cable to connect my modem router to my phone extension and I have had this cable down under the carpet for 5 years now.

    Other things to try:-
    1. Disconnect all other equipment from all of your phone sockets and try the connection again. If repeatedly better the equipment connected to your phone sockets could be faulty.

    2. If 1. doesn't make any different rotate your micro filters or buy a new decent one and try that.

    3. Try a new extension cable.

    4. Ask a friend to try your router to make sure the router isn't playing up - do you have the latest firmware on the router?

    Let me get this straight.

You have Sky broadband, and are running the router off a long extension cable.

Are you switching your router off at the wall or do you leave it permanently switched on? If you do the later then you should remain logged in at all times unless the connection drops out.

Try this: Click on the following http://192.168.0.1/sky_router_status.html

Then enter admin as user and sky as the password.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on show statistics.
