PS2 - there is no data

My daughters playstation has stopped working (just out of the guarantee period!).

When she inserts a disk, it just gives the message "There is no data".

Does anyone know if or how this can be fixed?

Many thanks for any help

Does this happen with all games, or just certain ones? We had this problem once (with one game), and I stuck a CD lens cleaning disc in. It cured the problem immediately.

How long have you had the PS2? How long was the guarantee? If it is broken, you could still legally claim a repair for free from the shop you bought it. The Sale of Goods Act covers you for the 'reasonable lifespan' of a product up to six years. For a PS2, you could reasonably assume that the lifespan should be at least 2 or 3 years. The guarantee offered by shops/manufacturers is over and above your rights under the Sale of Goods Act (this is law). It is the shops responsibilty to sort out a repair, not the manufacturer (your contract is with the shop you bought it from).

I had this problem and cleaning it was fine for a while but it became more frequent an then stopped altoghter.

    I followed this guide

    http://www.tweak3d.net/articles/ps2repair/index.shtml

Easier than it sounds, just take care when removing the top as the metal wire is irreplacable if broken ( more info in guide)

Mine has worked fine ever since (2 months)

    good luck

The first time this happened to my son we did as Rex did ... cleaned the lens with a good quality Maxell cleaning disk.

Worked for a few years till recently when the same problem recurred. Had to use a dismantling guide like the link in mitchb's post to clean the lens manually.

All working well now except that blue/purple disks won't play at all. Mind you this is a common problem and there's no real answer for that. I've tried just about every fix known to mankind (including reseating/adjusting the lens location itself) but got nowhere.

Just remember to buy games with "normal" silver coloured disks only.

  • ah the curse of the PS2, I have seen so many go in the bin, usually the orginal versions. Try cleaning the lens otherwise throw it in the bin and buy another one.

Another thought is to sell it on ebay to recoop some money, remember to sale as faulty and no returns if you go down that path.

thanks for all of the replies.

I have the newer version of PS2. We tried cleaning the lens, but it hasn't made a difference.

I feel very angry that I paid a lot of money fro this 18 months ago, and it only lasts this long. I will try to take it back to the sop as advised (Game), but I Don't feel very confident!

If you don't feel confident about taking it back. Give your local Trading Standards a quick call first. They can explain exactly what your rights are, and advise you what to say to the shop. This is definately worth a phone call before you go. Their number will be in your local phone book. It will also help your case if you explain to the shop you have contacted TS, and they advised you....(then explain what TS said).
