Growing Morning Glory up trellis and archway help

hi folks,

i've just put an archway in my garden and have fixed trellis panels to either side with the hope of planting a climber that covers the whole lot and forms a screen, thus sectioning off the garden.
I have no idea on how i should go about doing this but do know that i would like to plant Morning Glory (big Oasis fan).

1. Is it too late in the year to do this now?
2. The archway has a little planting box either side...would this be suitable to start the seeds off in or should i go for a row underneath the trellis?
3. How many seeds should u plant?

any help would be great

Here is some info on them. My brain is fuzzy tonight but I think you can overwinter it in September, but double check that as it might be something else I am growing....... The only thing about them is they are annuals. So they will die off after one year. It might be wise to go for a perennial climber such as honeysuckle or jasmine and grow the morning glories in wigwams...?

They are not frost hardy,I'd sort out the climbing area [trellis] then wait til spring, plant the seeds indoors and plant out first week in June. I have some growing up a drain pipe.

You could do a honeysuckle, a climbing jasmine or a rambling rose round the trellis. They are very nice. Or perhaps a clemantis. I have a passion flower growing over my arch way and that is very pretty! Morissons have an offer on at the moment for their perennial climbers. Think they are £1.50 each.

ok i'll have a look. Any tips on planting these? Can they be sown in decent size pots or do they need to be in the ground ideally?

i think id like to go with something that colours in season over the archway and an evergreen that is hardy as i dont want things dying when the harsh weather is upon us.

The arch is west facing but will receive sun early morning from behind, will be mostly shaded by the garage till around 3/4pm then the majority will be in full sun

I have a climbing rose and a jasmin and a clematis in troughs beside a trellis. the trellis is around the door so the plants have the protection of the house. The containers need to drain well and they also need feeding during the growing season and also watering most days. Its easier if they plants are in the ground, and if the planting container is small you run the risk of frost damage to roots which can kill the plant. A beer keg size is about the minimum for a climbing rose IMO.
If you plant a year round plant eg rose, you can still grow Morning Glory or sweetpeas, which are seasonal,as well. Another idea is to plant a pyracantha or cotoniaster which are evergreen, have flowers and them berries.

    Hi

    1. as said before sow your Morning glory seeds next spring.

    2. I would plant seasonal bedding in the little planting box - violas/pansies now perhaps?

3.You usually get about 20 seeds to a packet - 10 plants will be great either side- don't worry if they are crowded, more flowers to enjoy! I would plant them in the ground beside the trellis.

If you want AYR climbers then I would suggest an evergreen like Trachelospermum Jasminoides - lovely glossy green leaves that tend not to drop too much and fab Jasmine scented white flowers in the summer. Your Morning Glory would go well with the white flowers if you chose a blue/purple variety. Again planted in the ground.
